Our Covenant With God

Naturally, every human being is able to feel God in his heart.  That’s because before the soul was blown to the physical body in the mother’s womb, the soul already made a covenant with God in the spiritual world, as stated in the Qur’an chapter 7 verse 172: “When thy Lord drew (forth) from the children of Adam-from their loins- their descendants and made them testify concerning themselves (saying): “Am I not your Lord (Who cherishes and sustains you)?” They said: “Yea! We do testify!” (This), lest ye should say on the Day of Judgment: “Of this we were never mindful”.

All people were born in state of purity with the awareness of God and willingness to serve God only. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “No baby is born except that he is in his natural tendency (to worship Allah alone). It is his parents who make him a jew, a christian or a majusi (fire worshipper)."

Thus, every person has actually admitted that there is no god but God (Allah), that he will only worship God. The testimony also bears a consequence that during his life on earth, a person must not make other things as gods to him. Testifying that there is no god but God means that a person is not allowed to make worldly matters such as money, position, fame and fortune as god to him. He has promised that only God’s rules that matters.

Despite the fact that human being have made their covenant with God in the spiritual world, before being born to the world, generally people don’t feel or don’t remember at all that they had made such a covenant. However, what happened in the spiritual world can be proved in daily lives. The godly covenant still can be traced in our lives. There are many people who say that they don’t believe in God but when they are in despair they finally turn to God in one way or another.

Actually, it is normal when a person doesn’t remember his covenant with his Lord million years ago in the spiritual world. A person can’t even remember what happened and how he felt when he was still in his mother’s womb.  Let alone what happened in the womb, a person couldn’t remember his childhood or what he did a year ago, a month ago and even a week ago. That’s why God reminds people about the covenant through the Qur’an, the manual book for life.

Unfortunately, when some people are reminded about their covenant with God, they deny it and become angry instead. What makes people refuse to recognize their covenant with their Creator? What makes them refuse to be reminded about it?  It’s because the strong influence that surround them. The attack of materialism, secularism, atheism, and hedonism is so powerful that people are carried away by the deceit of worldly pleasure. Other gods in forms of money, wealth and riches, popularity, position, even women and men appear in the hearts of human being. One of the characters of God is that God doesn’t want to be taken partners as stated in the Qur'an chapter 4 verse 48. Once a person takes other things as god, God will go from his heart.

It is time to recall our covenant with God (Allah) and the covenant entails total obedience towards our Creator.

God forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything else, to whom He pleaseth; to set up partners with God is to devise a sin most heinous indeed. (Qur'an chapter 4 verse 48)

  1. As Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatulli wa Barakatuhu
This is a beautiful way to start a discussion on Islam. Muslims have to think before they say or do anything because what ever we say or do is for the pleasure of Allah. With this mental set we are ever conscious of His Presence and know that if we do not see Him He sees us.
Our actions are not only towards Muslims but towards all Allah's, Creation. I mention this because very often we hear he or she is not a Muslim so we do not have to feed or help them.
We are best of people but we have to earn that title. We have to live an exemplary life. We have to set the best example to our children and our immediate relatives. We must provide education to foster total development of each individual. We must get involved in community activities and establish youth groups so that children will take Muslims as friends.
These are some points we can extend to meet our special needs or ask for help through this medium.
Alhamdulillah ! Maharani, you made a bold step into the world of Islam I pray others will follow and through this we will each grow and develop into more conscious MUSLIMS . Ameen

  2. National covenants by the nations of Israel and Judah can be found in texts such as Exodus 19:8 , Joshua 24:24 , 2 Kings 3:3 (Josiah), 2 Chron. 15:8-15 , 23:16 , 34:31-32 , Nehemiah 10:29 and Jeremiah 50:5 . National covenants were often associated with times of spiritual renewal or revival.
