The Ultimate Goal: True Happiness in the World and in the Hereafter
When we decide to do something, we must have a goal. Fat people go on diet with the goal of having ideal body weight. Sales manager has a goal of increasing sales. Scientist has a goal of making invention…etc. Talking about goal in relation to the existence of human being, what is the goal of human being…? When we live in this world, what is exactly our goal? Have we set the goal? It is very important to have a goal to achieve in this world. What happens if we don't have it? Our life will have no clear direction, we might go to the wrong direction, our time is wasted, and we cannot evaluate ourselves.
The Qur'an is the manual book for human being. Regarding worldly life, Allah (God) says in the Qur'an chapter 47 verse 36, "The life of this world is but play and amusement…" Also in chapter 57 verse 20, "…And what is the life of this world, but goods and chattels of deception?" Since God has already warned human being about amusing and deceiving worldly life, it is therefore improper and mistaken to make the world as a place to pursue fun and pleasure. Many people have set wrong goals while living on earth. Some of them want to be always healthy, but people can't always be healthy during their lives. Some set the goal of having bright career but that's uncertain as there are always smarter, more ambitious people out there, not to mention the uncertain economic condition. Some set the goal of always to be rich, yet, calamities and disasters are out of our control. Some set the goal of having great children but we don't know whether our children will live longer than us…etc…etc. Such worldly goals are abstract, in a sense that not all people can achieve them and people can't have them all the time. Those goals are out of our control. So, what is the right goal?
The right goal for human being is of course the one set by The Creator. God has already given clues what human being should achieve in life, in the world and in the hereafter. God says in chapter 2 verse 38,"…whosoever follows my guidance, on them shall be no fear, not shall they grieve." Chapter 4 verse 13, "…those who obey God and His Apostle will be admitted to heavens…" Living on earth with no fear at all, no grieve at all, and finally when we die, we'll go to heaven. Now, that is the ultimate goal that every human being long for, that is the state of being truly happy in the world (no fear, no sadness, no grieve) and happy in the hereafter (admitted to heaven). Have you ever thought of higher goal than that? It's impossible. And such ultimate goal can be reached by all people – the rich, the poor, the young, the old, the sick, the healthy, the one with children, the childless.
So, the ultimate goal of human being (as stated in the Qur'an) is true happiness in this world and in the hereafter (heaven). However, every goal needs a strategy to reach it. That's because if the goal is already set but the strategy to achieve it is wrong, then the goal will not be achieved. What's the strategy? As stated above, the strategy to achieve the ultimate goal is by following the guidance or rules of God in the Qur'an and following the Apostle of God, Muhammad (peace be upon him).
It sounds easy to achieve the ultimate goal. Simply obey the rules of God. But, is it that easy? It turns out that it is not easy because there is the barrier, which is the low desires of human being. How to beat or calm the low desires? We can beat them by having Godly beliefs in our heart. So, Godly beliefs are very important as they are the means to achieve the ultimate goal. And how to obtain Godly beliefs? We can obtain them by doing spiritual and life contemplation. Thus, it goes like this:
Contemplation —-> Godly beliefs—->
Low desires– —–> Obedience to the rules in the Qur'an —-> Ultimate Goal achieved (true happiness in this world and in the hereafter).
Being focused in reaching the goal as well as being consistent in doing contemplation are perfect combination for a person to reach the ultimate goal, which is true happiness in the world and in the hereafter..
Let's contemplate… If a person has a goal of true happiness, when he gets sick, will he be stressful? Not at all as he realizes that sickness is the sign of God's mercy. God erases his sins through the sickness.
If a person has a goal of true happiness, when his child dies, will he be sad? No, as he realizes that the child is not his. The child is a trust from God and God can take the child at anytime He wants.
If a person has a goal of true happiness and his business collapses, will he be frustrated? No, as he realizes that he can only do the best effort for his business, but still the final result is up to God, not up to him.
True happiness is a clear, reachable goal given by God Almighty. Due to His Mercy, God also reveals us, human being, the strategy to reach it. Simply obey God's rules because the rules are all for the sake of the happiness of our hearts or souls…
“For any adversity a true believer suffers, Allah (God) erases some of his sins, even though it may be no more than a thorn pricking him” – (saying of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) –
